April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time nationally and locally dedicated to raising public awareness about sexual violence and educating communities on how to prevent it. This year, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC) is honoring the campaign with the theme, Let’s Talk!

Let’s Talk, will explore the many ways individuals can make a difference by supporting survivors of sexual abuse and human trafficking. All month long, CRCC is highlighting activities such as, attending a film festival, concert, panel discussion and even an art exhibit.

“Everyone has a role to play in ending sexual assault, harassment, and abuse”, said Sondra Miller, Cleveland Rape Crisis CEO & President.  “That’s why we’re spotlighting the many opportunities for people to get involved. From the working professional, the student or community member, there’s something for everyone. Let’s get talking and create meaningful threads of conversation that show support to survivors through a trauma informed lens.”

In recent weeks, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC) has experienced an outpouring of public support in response to the Brown’s decision to add Deshaun Watson to the team.

As of this morning, more than 2,000 new donors have given over $100,000 in support of Cleveland Rape Crisis Center’s mission and services.  About 1/3 of donors referenced the Browns and/or Deshaun as the motivation to give.  An equal amount of donors gave $22 – in support of the 22 women who have accused Watson of sexual assault and currently have civil cases pending against him.

“While we are reminded that even today, many survivors are still suffering in silence, we are hopeful that the national conversation that is occurring will propel the anti-sexual violence movement” said Sarah Trimble, Chief External Affairs Officer, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center.

Calls to Cleveland Rape Crisis Center’s 24-hour hotline increased more than 130% immediately after the Browns announced Deshaun Watson as quarterback.

“Survivors are seeking support at heightened levels.  I am proud of our ability to meet the increased demand for services. Thanks to this outpouring of support, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center is positioned to ensure that anyone who reaches out to the Center can receive the highest level of care.”

Cleveland Rape Crisis Center Launches NEW App Designed to Prevent Sexual Violence & Human Trafficking

Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC) marks this year’s Human Trafficking Awareness Month with the launch of a new app that will engage teens, parents and educators, in preventing sexual violence while connecting survivors to services. The app highlights topics such as healthy relationships and boundaries, bystander intervention, and healthy social media use.

“Cleveland Rape Crisis Center has a 47-year history of supporting survivors of sexual violence and working to prevent it from happening in the first place,” said Sondra Miller, president & CEO.  “Today, we’re leveraging technology to advance our mission in yet another innovative way.”

According to the Center for Prevention of Abuse 1 in 4 victims of human trafficking are children and research from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center indicates that 1 in 4 girls will experience unwanted sexual contact before the age of 18.  More than one-third of those who seek services at Cleveland Rape Crisis Center are children and teens.

“Although sexual violence is prevalent and disproportionately impacts our youth, we have hope that – with the right tools – we can reduce and someday eliminate it.  We must give youth and young adults the tools they need to navigate difficult conversations and situations and inspire societal change. That is what we aim to do with this app,” added Miller.

The app is free and allows users to connect to CRCC’s crisis & support hotline, as well as find articles, videos and information that promote healthy relationships and affirmative consent.  It is a complement to CRCC’s youth development and prevention programs available to schools and youth-serving organizations.  The Higley Fund of the Cleveland Foundation provided funding for the app’s development.

Visit here to view app information and here to install the app on a mobile device.
