Cleveland, OH (June 19, 2017) – Cleveland Rape Crisis Center is pleased to announce the opening of its new Westside Office, located at 27887 Clemens Road, Westlake, OH 44145, to provide direct services to survivors of rape and sexual abuse.
The Westside Office will offer survivors of rape and sexual abuse in Western Cuyahoga County with an option to access specialized services including counseling, victim assistance and support groups close to home. The Center expects to serve clients from many communities in Western Cuyahoga County at the new location.
“Survivors of rape and sexual abuse live in every community in Northeast Ohio, and with the opening of the new Westside Office, our goal is to help survivors in Western Cuyahoga County access our premier services close to home,” said Sondra Miller, President & CEO, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center. “We’re proud to now offer counseling for adults and children, victim assistance and support groups in the new location.”

Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the U.S. have been raped at some time in their lives[1]. Rape is one of the most under-reported crimes, with nearly two-thirds of rapes never reported, and only 12 percent of child sexual abuse reported to authorities[2].
“We welcome survivors of rape and sexual abuse to access our services no matter how long ago they were harmed,” said Miller. “Many of our clients come to us months, years, or even decades later. We want all survivors to know: you are not alone, and you can recover and lead a healthy and happy life.”

Cleveland Rape Crisis Center hosted Girls In Motion, an empowerment workshop for girls ages 9-18 and their parents or guardians. Over 150 participants spent the day focusing on inspiration, support and empowerment and enjoying self-esteem-building activities including yoga, mask-making and conversations about healthy relationships.

The Center honored Tom with the 2017 Face of Change Award at its Faces of Change Luncheon on April 13, 2017.

Cleveland Rape Crisis Center is pleased to partner with the Lake County Prosecuting Attorney’s Victim Assistance Program to present a four-part training series for professionals who work with victims of rape and sexual abuse. The trainings will be presented by Kirsti Mouncey, LISW-S, LCDCIII, Chief Program Officer at Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, and will take place April to June 2017 at Tripoint Medical Center, Lake Health, in Concord Township.

Topic Overview
An organization that is trauma-informed realizes the widespread impact of trauma on victims and understands potential paths for healing. This training series assists advocates across service systems, in understanding the prevalence of trauma amongst their client population, and how their interaction with clients can positively enhance the recovery process. Participants will build their knowledge about the effects of trauma on an individual and will develop ready-to-implement tools for use in their day-to-day work with clients and communities. Professionals will also be provided with valuable self-care tools that build resiliency against vicarious trauma and burnout.

Professionals who come into contact with victims of rape and sexual abuse in the hospital, social service, justice and community service systems.
Training Series Modules, Dates and Times
Module 1: Understanding Trauma and its Impact – April 28, 2017, 8:30AM-12PM
This interactive professional development training will lay the ground work for a trauma informed advocacy practice. It provides information necessary to understand the difficulties trauma survivors face and provides insight into why trauma informed care is vital in responding effectively to all clients, across systems.
Module 2: Understanding Trauma Informed Care – May 26, 2017, 8:30AM-12PM
This interactive professional development training will dive deeper into the trauma informed approach to help professionals better engage people with histories of trauma. Participants will walk away with heightened awareness and skills on how their interaction with clients, and the overall organizational culture, can positively enhance the clients experience and minimize re-traumatization.
Module 3: Building your Trauma Informed Tool Kit – June 23, 2017, 8:30AM-12PM
This interactive professional development training will allow professionals, in a variety of settings, to build a tool kit for use in their day-to-day work with clients. Little changes and simple techniques can go a long way to help clients feel empowered and supported.
Module 4: Vicarious Trauma and Self-Care – July 13, 2017, 8:30AM-12PM
Learn, laugh and breathe with other professionals for a morning of self- care! This training will enhance participant’s awareness of how stress and burnout can lead to vicarious trauma when working with traumatized clients. This workshop will provide exercises, and valuable self-care tools, to build resiliency. Workshop participants will learn how to identify vicarious trauma in themselves and their work environment to create a better workplace for themselves, their co-workers and clients.
